NPP “UKRTRUBOIZOL” manufactures electrically welded straight-seamed steel pipes Ø426-1422 mm with a wall thickness from 6 to 24 mm, up to 12 meters long, made of steel of strength class up to K60. The capacity of the line, depending on the assortment, is up to 25,000 tons per year.

Production of longitudinal electric welded pipes

There are no analogues of this line for the production of welded pipes in Ukraine, since it is equipped with modern equipment for a full technological cycle of production of large-diameter pipes intended for main gas and oil pipelines, and includes the following components:

1. Plasma cutting and edge mill

Plasma cutting and edge mill, where processing is performed to the longitudinal edges of the sheet receiving and processing of predetermined width of the weld groove.

2. Formation of pipe blanks

JCO press for forming pipe blanks. The total weight of JCO is over 300 tons. Forming is carried out in several passes until a predetermined cylindrical shape of the blanks profile is reached. The formation process is controlled by a computer system.

3. Preforming mill

A preforming mill for bending flat sections of longitudinal edges of blanks of electric-welded steel pipes in automatic mode by rolling the edges of a pipe blank between rollers of a bending machine.

4. Welding mill

Assembly and welding machine for assembling pipe blanks and automatic welding of a continuous technological seam in a shielded gas environment.

5. Internal welding mill

Mill of internal welding for welding of working seams by automatic multi-arc (two or three arcs) welding under a layer of flux.

6. Mill of external welding

Mill for welding the external working seam by automatic multi-arc (One, two or three arcs) submerged arc welding.

7. Hydro-mechanical expanding machine

To meet the requirements of modern regulatory documents, electric-welded steel pipes are cold-calibrated. Calibration is carried out along the entire length of the pipe on a hydromechanical expander. Expansion takes into account the supply of the expander calibration tool inside the pipe for a certain length (step), the expansion (expansion) of this length section using the calibration tool, removal of the expansion force, as well as the supply of the tool to the next step.

The expansion operation provides the following:

  1. Stabilization of the mechanical properties of the base metal of the pipe due to hardening mechanisms during the transition to the plastic deformation region.
  2. Giving a pipe billet to the required shape and dimensions (ovality, perimeter, deviation from the theoretical circumference, curvature, etc.).
  3. Additional quality control of welded pipe joints.

8. Hydraulic test.

Hydraulic press – internal hydraulic pressure test with the purpose of checking the strength and density of the base metal of steel pipes, electrowelded and welded seams. Hydraulic testing is a necessary procedure that testifies to the reliability of pipes as elements of pipelines operating under pressure throughout their service life. This is extremely important, given the serious danger to people’s life and health, as well as the man-made danger in the event of pipe malfunctions and accidents.

9. Non-destructive control method

Pipes that have undergone expansion and hydrotesting are subjected to non-destructive control. Inspection of the base metal of pipe ends for integrity along the entire perimeter of the pipe is carried out by modern ultrasonic control devices.

UKRAINE’S ONLY LINE FOR THE PRODUCTION OF EXPANDED PIPES FOR OIL AND GAS PIPELINES

Considering the compliance with quarantine measures, it took a year and a half for the installation, debugging, obtaining permits and launching the line for the production of expanded large-diameter pipe. Now work is underway to install a hydromechanical expander for through expansion of pipes with a diameter of 406.4 mm to 1422 mm with a wall thickness of up to 24 mm. This equipment provides high strength and precise geometry of pipes along the entire length. There are no analogues of such equipment in Ukraine.

The new line is additionally equipped with a hydraulic press for internal pressure testing. Hydraulic test is performed to check the strength and continuity of the base metal and pipe welds. This guarantees the reliability and durability of pipelines operating under pressure.

THE PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF NPP UKRTRUBOIZOL’S HYDROMECHANICAL EXPANDER

A cone-shaped expansion head located at the end of the rod of a pipe hydromechanical expander is inserted into the pipe at a certain distance – a step. Expansion head segments extent and exert pressure on the inner surface of the pipe along the entire perimeter. Stresses appear in the pipe walls equal to the metal’s yield point. An increase in diameter – plastic deformation – occurs. After the segments of the expansion head take the initial position, the pipe slightly decreases in diameter due to the spring return of the metal and takes the given form. The cycle circulates with each step of the expander movement along the pipe axis. As a result, the pipe gets the specified geometric parameters (perimeter, curvature, ellipticity) and stabilization of mechanical properties.

The pipes can be coated with an external anti-corrosion coating with extruded polyethylene according to TU U-27.2-31017014-001: 2005 or an external polyurethane coating with an airless application device. The application of internal anti-corrosion coating with epoxy compositions according to TU U-27.2-31017014-003: 2011 can also be performed.
